Julie de Azevedo Hanks, LCSW

By Steve Baxter

Whether it’s a quiet moment of empathy with a client in her counseling practice, putting pen to paper while sitting at the piano writing a heartfelt song, leading a lively workshop with several hundred women discussing emotional health, or gathering her little family around the evening dinner table, Julie de Azevedo Hanks is all about making meaningful connections. Who better to connect with viewers on KJZZ-TV’s the “Home Team” talk-show as Monday morning’s relationship host? It’s clear that Julie is passionate about women’s issues. “As women, we are all struggling with similar things; how to find balance in our lives, how to continue our personal growth while caring for our families, and how to have more satisfying relationships. That’s what Monday’s will be all about,” Julie says.

Julie is keenly aware of the many issues facing Utah women today. As a licensed clinical social worker in private practice, Julie provides effective counseling to individuals, couples, and families and is passionate about helping women improve their personal lives, their marriages, and their family relationships. She is a frequent presenter on mental health and relationship issues in the community. Julie holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, a Master’s degree in social work, and is the founder and clinical director of Wasatch Family Therapy, LLC, an outpatient counseling clinic in Salt Lake City, UT.

In addition to her therapy practice, Julie comes from a well-known musical family, and has been inspiring listeners for the past 20 years as a professional singer- songwriter and recording artist. “Songwriting is my therapy,” Julie says. Her honest and insightful songwriting has garnered numerous awards from the Faith Centered Music Association, Utah’s Best of State Female Vocalist, and rave reviews from music critics. Her most recent CD, appropriately titled “Home”, explores the intersection of life and faith with a focus on relationships, with children, spouse, and one’s self: common themes in Julie’s personal and professional life. It’s no surprise that Julie wrote the “Home Team” show’s theme song.

Julie’s most valuable educational experience and source of creativity comes from being “in the trenches” of family life for the past 19 years with her wonderful husband Jeff. “Managing dating and diapers, ACT’s and ABC’s simultaneously is often overwhelming,” Julie says of her four children ranging in age from 1 to 17. “I am thrilled to have a venue to talk with other women about their family experiences, to support each other, share ideas, and to know that we are not alone.”
