Our own Home Team relationship expert Julie de Azevedo Hanks, LCSW stressed the importance of developing an open relationship with children, and that discussions about sexuality will grow naturally out of everyday interactions if parents are open to those opportunities. Here are some guidelines for what to teach your children at every stage:
Ages 0-3 Correct Words for Body parts, Positive Input about Bodies
Ages 4-5 General Where Babies Come From (“a baby grows in the mother’s uterus and she pushes the baby out”)
Ages 5-6 General Idea How Babies Are Made (“a small cell in daddy and a small cell in mommy join together and a baby grows”)
Ages 7-8 “The Big Talk” Basic Understanding of Mechanics of Intercourse
Ages 8-9 Follow-up Discussions, Importance of Sex in Adult Relationships
Ages 9-11 Details of puberty, Open & Accurate Information on a Variety of Topics
Ages 11-16 Behavioral Restraint, Sexual Values
