How to Do Mental Imagery - Angela Bussio -
angelabussio.comMental Imagery is very different from traditional visualization processes, which are usually quite long and scripted scenarios. Some basics to keep in mind:
• In mental imagery we use quick, short pictures. It is short and gives a shock to the system. It is homeopathic in nature- in other words, you give a little input for a large output. In these short sessions, we are literally re-writing or re-wiring your system- giving it new information for how to deal with whatever is ailing you.
• Uses the language of pictures or symbols. Every emotion, word, experience has an associated symbol that you have created for it. You simply have to close your eyes, think of the emotion, disease, discomfort and ask for the picture. It may come as a color or feeling- this is just fine
• These exercises are not coping exercises or new ways to deal with current experiences. These exercise will generate NEW EXPERIENCES that you will create automatically once the mind has been given new information
• Take imagery like a prescription: 3 times a day: AM, Afternoon and PM for 21 days, and notice what happens.
An Imagery to shift to create new emotional/physical responses
This script is a generic formula that I use with my clients. You can use it with any emotion to help you resolve it and change your reactions.
1. Sit in a chair upright. Close your eyes. Take 3 breaths with long exhalations.
2. Think of the current problem or chronic situation you want to change
3. Ask to see the image. If you cannot see a picture, see, sense, hear or feel
whatever is coming up. My clients will usually have a color or texture that will appear if they cannot see an exact picture.
4. Imagine that you are in the picture with the image, color etc. How big is the image next to you? Notice this
5. Now, make a door in the image and go inside the image.(shrink yourself down if its smaller than you) Notice how you feel. Get a flashlight if its dark and look around.
6. Now go back outside to your normal size. Now look at the image- point at the image and say, out loud if you can “You are not me- I created you”
7. Destroy the image any way that you can.
Replace it with an opposite image- For instance if the image that you get for anger is a red fiery wall, picture a garden wall (green opposite of red) with water (opposite of fire) flowing down over it.
