Home Team: George Limberakis, LPC-How To Get a Good Night's Sleep

By Steve Baxter

Very few people are able to function effectively on the average 5-6 hours/night of sleep. Most experts agree that 7-9 hours of sound sleep per night is required for optimal performance. There is a cumulative effect of chronic sleep deprivation that increases production of stress hormones that affect the entire body. Getting into a regular schedule of going to sleep and waking at the same time every day will help you get the most out of your sleep time. Loud snoring and/or interrupted breathing during sleep may be indicative of a serious sleep disorder. Consult a sleep specialist, if necessary.

Tips for improving sleep:

Daily exercise Daily meditation/relaxation Avoid naps late in afternoon.
Avoid alcohol 4-6 hours before bed.
Limit caffeine during day.
Cigarette smoking interferes with sleep.
Comfortable bed/pillows.
Reduce noise or add white noise.
Dark at night/light in the AM.
Use bed only for sleep and sex.
Keep bedroom temperature on cool side.
Have a set bed time and waking time Create a bedtime ritual
