THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING UTAH V. OREGON
Note: I re-watch the game knowing the outcome. However, I try to give you my thought as I watch as though I don’t know what is going to take place.
• The Wide carry that lost two the guy who made the tackle was assigned to Cain so the fake was usless.
• Wow did guys ever lose their lanes in a big way on the punt return for a TD.
• First snaps for Cain trailing all season – how will he deal?
• 3rd and 1 – this was a disaster last week and this is where I hate the spread. How do they do? So slow in developing there is no way that is going to work very often. He snuck a yard out on this with a good spot.
• Oregon doing some interesting things defensively they are putting 3 down lineman and sometimes rushing three but other times bringing the 4th but no is sure from where and it has Cain jumpy.
• Reed gets blasted on a no play – is he going to be in this game the rest of the way. Brooks already looks scared.
• Utah defense hasn’t been on the field yet to make a statement but the Oregon defense has set the tone and they are the aggressors
• Cain is beginning to have a lot of balls knocked down at the line, He had 3 knocked down last week. 3 of his last 19 passes were knocked down. Prior to having a ball knocked down last week he was 7 for 8 after he was 9-19
• The exact same play as Wide got hit for the loss and the guy who hit Wide went after him again and this time Cain goes into the end zone for the Td. Tied at 7.
• Nothing cute about what Oregon is doing they are pounding the middle and Utah is giving.
• Utah gets the ball tied at 7. This is a big drive early because Oregon’s offense is clearly off kilter and you need to make them play with pressure.
• Bad three and out – Brooks looks completely out of it. He was begging for the flag before the play was over.
• On the big play(58 yd pass) by Oregon, Utah lined up wrong. #27 Brandon Burton lines on wrong side so they had a receiver run free.
• Oregon is running a double tied end with both TE on the same side and It is causing some confusion.
• Huge swing, Utes had the ball with a chance to take control, they go 3 and out on two terrible throws and the defense has alignment issues, which cost a touchdown. WOW
• Asiata never breaks a lot of tackles but today he looks like the minute he gets hit he wants to go down rather than take another hit.
• Time for Kyle to yell “Wake Up” to Brooks
• Oregon is only rushing 3 on most plays – great call against the Utes slant passing game
• The 3 man rush is killing Cain, he can’t make a quick throw and then he is struggling to make the throws.
• Cain 3 for 8 on the 3 man rush and has missed 5 in a row
• Oregon’s offense has not had a successful play in the last 7 snaps and are just 6 for 24. Success is 40% of the yds on 1st down; 60% of the yards to go on 2nd down and 100% of yard to go on 3rd down. Utah defense is completely dominating this portion of the game.
• Utah offense has not had a successful play in 9 straight snaps and 13 of 14. The only one is the TD run. Utah is also only 6 for 24.
• Basically, both teams are putrid offensively right now.
• The 3 man rush is forcing Cain to throw deep.
• Blocked punt – Utah can’t make these mistakes and win. I said they need three big field position plays to win and they are losing all of those.
• Love the reverse call by Oregon, Schramm needs to try some of that right now but he has nothing established to build off.
• Huge gift by Oregon to give Utah the ball on the 40, must take advantage
• This is really awful.
• On the Masoli 23 yard touchdown run both Stevenson Sylvester and Joe Dale abandoned their assignments.
• When Cain fell apart in the last two games the coaches went to the rollout. They finally try it again after he had missed 11 straight passes
• Cain is a mess right now. He has no idea what he is reading pre-snap. He had a delay of game in a no huddle, he can’t find receivers on the rollout and he is way out of sorts.
• Coaches amaze me – why would Oregon change its defense just because the clock in the half was running down – insanity.
• Oregon is giving Utah this game – amazing start to the 2nd half.
• Wow what an idea – short yardage play and you take the ball from under center.
• Some nice plays in the 2nd half drive. But it is also the first time you have seen Utah offense with a personality. I said all week I think they are trying to be too many things and here for the first time they are runs to Asista with 1 step pass plays to receivers to make plays. Previously it was all long and deep passing and Cain sucked. The aforementioned 3 man rush may have eliminated a lot of this.
• Cain gutsy throw plus Robert Johnson TD and for all the problems and all the inadequacies you have 17 minutes of football and you are down one score and in the game.
• This is a great time to find out what the coaches believe in about this team.
• If this is a team lead by the defense a 3 and out has to happen.
• Interesting – Oregon goes 2 TE on this key drive and just says we are stronger than you are and it seems to be working.
• How can you be offsides on a huge 3rd and 2. Stupid
• Oregon has run the ball 10 of last 11 plays and has 10 carries for 87 yds – OUCH
• Great stop on 4th down – it took a long time but that is what the defense is supposed to do.
• The offense has a chance to win this game
• Utah has the ball with 15:00 left down 4 on their own 33 who are they? What are there go to plays. I would say Asiata and bubble screens and 1 step passes to wide receiver.
• 3 and out and Asiata doesn’t get a touch. Bubble screen, two straight passes. Not who they are.
• Oregon has had success (40% of yards to go on 1st down; 60% on 2nd or 100% on 3rd) on 13 of last 17 runs. That is disturbing.
• Offense has another chance down 4 ball at the 17 with 12:00 left – who are you?
• Schramm opens up both of the last two possessions with an empty backfield and 5 wide. I type this before I have seen the outcome of the play but this is really insane. They went deep to Key is that who you are.
• Then on 2nd and 10 Schramm comes out with a TE and a back – again I type this before I have seem what happens
• 3 man rush kills Cain again.
• I like Ron Franklin a lot but he is having a bad night
• 20 straight run calls by Oregon – that is humiliating to some extent
• Utah has either done everything they can to stay in this game or they have been put back in this game by Oregon’s inadequacies.
• If Masoli has was 1st team Pac-10 QB this year the conference quarterbacking sucks because he is terrible.
• Same game with Schramm for the third time – within 4 7:42 left and down 4 – who are you?
• Utah’s offense has had success on just 1 of its last 10 plays
• Offensive Pass Interference penalty is death and really unnecessary but a good call.
• The pick to Asiata is bad but it was a brilliant play – the penalty left the Utes having to play a passing game and Cain has been terrible at the traditional passing game all day.
• Why with 2:10 left are you shooting the moon when you are moving the ball and that hasn’t worked all game. I am really unclear who Utah thinks they are.
