Utah - 38

SDSU - 7

Rice-Eccles Stadium - It didn’t take long for the Utes to answer the question on the coaches minds, in their 38 - 7 romp of San Diego State.

The question, will there be a hangover effect after the loss to TCU.

The answer, “Not at all!”

The Aztecs got the ball first and it looked as if there may have been some residue left over as SDSU was marching down the field and doing it on the ground. Then when the Aztecs went to the air, Lamar Chapman was there and picked SDSU QB Ryan Lindley off at the Utah 48 yard line.

After the interception, the Utes left no doubt that the loss at TCU was in their rear view mirror. On their next play from scrimmage, Jordan Wynn hit David Reed on a 44-yard pass. That set up a Eddie Wide touchdown run on the very next play.

After the game, both the players and the coaches talked about the importance for the Utes to get off to a quick start in the game. Not just because of the loss last week, but also to prove to themselves that they can get off to a fast start (something they haven’t been able to do all season).

That for the most part, wrapped up the game. The Utes never, left the game in doubt dominating on both sides of the ball, going into the half up 38 - 0 and coasting from that point on.

Jordan Wynn for his part in his 3rd start once again proved why he was made the starter 3 ½ weeks ago. The offense was once again much more fluid and looked like the Ute spread offense. Wynn was also impressive with his throws down the field hitting a pair of 44-yard deep balls.

Now the focus turns to BYU next week.

After the game, Coach Whittingham did his best to down play the week saying, “It still counts as just 1 win.”

The players however all gave a hint of the importance of the game. Wynn talked of watching old rivalry games in the dorms over the summer. While others talked of revenge for the loss in Provo just 2 years ago.

Whittingham did boast that he has more experience than any other player or coach has had in rivalry games, but that was about all the special treatment that Whittingham was willing to give towards next Saturdays game.

And while there is no conference title on the line next week, it’s still Utah/BYU.

Let the fun begin!
