FDA Approves New 24-Day Oral Contraceptive

By Tracey Ziegler

ROCKAWAY, N.J. — Pharmaceutical company Warner Chilcott announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its new 24-day oral contraceptive for the prevention of pregnancy.

Most oral contraceptives are taken each day of the month at approximately the same time each day. This new pill will appeal to women who would prefer the convenience of not having to remember to take a pill each and every day.

Loestrin(R) 24 Fe (norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol tablets, USP and ferrous fumarate tablets), simply called "Loestrin 24", is the first birth-control pill approved in the United States that provides 24 days of active hormonal therapy and four days of iron containing placebo pills.

"This FDA approval is a significant step forward for Warner Chilcott as we continue to sharpen our therapeutic focus on women's health and expand our product portfolio in this area," said Roger Boissonneault, Chief Executive Officer of Warner Chilcott.

Warner Chilcott is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on two areas: women's healthcare and dermatology.
