In 2006 the Larry Miller Theater chain took on the Hollywood establishment by refusing to play Brokeback Mountain, a western about two gay cowboys. The rejection became part of the standup comedians nightly routines for a while. Now the theater chain is willing to suffer their jokes again by rejecting a new movie called “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.”
Some newspapers and television programs are refusing to use the word porno in their advertisements, and are simply calling it “Zack and Miri.” The movie originally received an NC-17 rating, which means absolutely no children under 17, but the director Keven Smith successfully appealed and now it’s being shown with an “R” rating. Megaplex general manger, Cal Gunderson, said, “We feel it’s very close to an NC-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex." Critics of the Megaplex’s policies point to other movies that have played at the theaters which seemed to have similar content, and say that “Saw V” which is currently playing, has extreme violence which should prohibit its showing as well.
