Joseph Smith Papers

Time: 8:00 pm

When: Sunday Nights

Each of the weekly episodes will focus on the documents that are central to The Joseph Smith Papers Project (The Papers). Documents include the earliest handwritten texts of the foundational documents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Joseph Smith's revelations and translations. The Papers will also provide insights into Joseph's life and times through his correspondence, journals, discourses, court cases, and business dealings. In addition, The Papers consist of minutes of important church councils, reproductions of the scriptural canon as it existed during Joseph Smith's lifetime, official histories, and records pertaining to church institutions that were under Joseph Smith's direction or that reflect his personal instruction and involvement.

Host Glenn Rawson will take viewers to an examination desk just outside the church archives to look at these rare documents with the scholars who have spent years and years researching them and verifying their authenticity. Historical visuals, interviews and excerpts from lectures given by scholars at key historical sites will provide additional background and context. Examples of episode themes include the differing accounts of Joseph Smith’s First Vision, profiles on the Smith family, Joseph and Apostates, how Joseph Smith received revelation, and Joseph’s relationship with his wife Emma. The series generally follows a chronological path but often ventures down side roads that add texture to Joseph Smith and his times.

“Creating original programming for local viewers is something we feel strongly about,” said Chris Baum, General Manager for KJZZ-TV. “Having the opportunity to air information about The Joseph Smith Papers Project on KJZZ is something we are very proud of.
