This is one of my favorite recipes...nope, you can't eat it but it sure holds lots of good memories for me! My Mom would make this for us while we were gone at school. We would come home and play all night only stopping for dinner and bed. She would make several different colors and we loved mixing them. It is a great family tradition because when money was tight it was an inexpensive but cool gift to give at friends birthday parties. They also make great neighbor Christmas gifts as you can give them some cookie cutters with the playdough and they can make homemade ornaments as a family by baking them.
Recipe for Homemade Playdough:
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tarter
1/2 tsp. oil
1 cup water (room temp.)
Food coloring
Mix your dry ingredients (flour, salt, and cream of tarter) together in a medium saucepan.
Turn on burner to medium heat.
Mix 1 cup water with food coloring (the more drops you put in the more vibrant the color will be. Add oil. Mix again.
Pour wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir with wooden spoon. Place on hot burner for 3 minutes. It will start to roll into a ball. After three minutes remove from pan and let cool slightly. Knead for a couple of minutes. Store in airtight container or zipper bag. May double if you are making for several children. Will not stain and will last several months if stored correctly.
This may not be what you are looking for the show, but it is a fun recipe and cheap entertainment while times are tough for families.
