Teen drowns while swimming with friends, family at Deer Creek Reservoir

UPDATE (June 18, 9 a.m.) -- Officials identified the teen victim who drowned at Deer Creek Reservoir as 17-year-old Fernando Botello Arrendondo.

A teen is dead after swimming with his family in Deer Creek Reservoir Thursday.

(ORIGINAL STORY) -- Authorities have not identified the 17-year-old young man who drowned while he was on a recreational outing with family and friends. Lt. Eric Stucki with Utah State Parks, said at 4:45 p.m. the teen was swimming with his sister in the reservoir at Deer Creek State Park. He went under the water for an unknown reason and she tried to grab him and help him but wasn't able to perform a rescue.

The water in the area he was playing in was approximately 4-8 feet deep.

The teen wasn't wearing a flotation device and authorities were called when he didn't resurface.

Stucki said the body was recovered at approximately 7:30 p.m. He said it is anticipated the victim will be identified tomorrow in a press release about the tragic incident.
